Sidewalk Cinema started in 2002 by co-creating Movies on the Wall in West Seattle, Washington. Since then we have created many other events and series showing films outdoors and indoors all throughout the Pacific Northwest. In this section, I’ll be sharing tips and techniques for how you too can create and run an outdoor cinema.
I’d like to put on my own outdoor movie, what do I need?
Location - A field, a parking lot, a roof-top, or some type of open space that provides safe and easy access to the event. Also, one that is generally free of ambient light and won’t disturb the neighbors. Also think about amenities such as a concession stand, trash cans, toilets, and area lighting post-movie.
Licensing - For public events like an outdoor movie, you will need an exhibition license either from a consolidator like Swank or directly with the rights holder. Licensing also includes any music that might be playing, live or recorded.
Equipment - At a minimum, you will need a projector, screen, speakers, cables (audio, power, video), Blu-ray player or computer, stands, tables, and chairs.
Advertising - Get the word out so that people know about the event, when (after sunset), and where. If you have sponsors be sure to include them in any advertising. Sponsors are also a great source to help fund the event and can help reach out to their customers about the event.
People - While it is possible to do all this yourself, it is much more fun to gather up friends and family to help organize and host the event. Have a point person on each of these areas listed above. Create a community event and fund-raiser for the local food bank or sponsor a non-profit to receive donations. The real fun in creating an outdoor movie event is with the community you help build.
